There is no specific subject as such which is needed for qualifying the CDS examination. The minimum eligibility criteria (educational qualification) for CDS:
For IMA /OTA : A degree from a recognized University or equivalent.
For Indian Naval Academy: Bachelor of Engineering.
For Air Force Academy: Degree of a recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10 +2 level ) or Bachelor of Engineering.

5740 rank is in ST category if we convert it into general rank it would be around 400000-500000.
So, at this rank, it is too difficult for you to grab a NIT in other state.
Try for NIT in your home state quota I.e. NIT Hamirpur.

HBTU has come under JEE Mains system from 2017 onwards and only those students will get admission who have cleared JEE Mains cut-off and secured a good rank.

Yes, you can consider doing certificate course or a Diploma. I would recommend you to go for 10+2 and then do a degree instead.
