ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System — the credit system used across European universities:

•     Why it matters for Germany: German universities evaluate your Indian degree based on ECTS credits, not just percentage or CGPA

•     Required for master's admission: Most German programs require 240 ECTS credits from your bachelor's degree (equivalent to a 4-year European bachelor's)

•     Conversion: A typical 4-year Indian B.Tech = ~240 ECTS. A 3-year Indian bachelor's = ~180 ECTS (may be insufficient for some programs)

•     Where to find ECTS: Your university should mention credit points (or contact hours) on your transcript

•     If your transcript doesn't show ECTS: Get a credit equivalency letter from university or use the anabin database (German recognition database)

Public universities are very strict on ECTS. Private universities are generally more flexible.

Studienkolleg is a preparatory course for international students who need to bridge academic gaps before entering German universities:

•     Who needs it: Students whose 12th grade education is not directly equivalent to German university entry requirements

•     Duration: 1 academic year (2 semesters)

•     What it covers: Prepares you in relevant subjects (Mathematics, Science, Languages, Social Sciences) depending on your programme of study

•     Language: Taught in German (B2 level required for entry)

•     After Studienkolleg: You take the Feststellungsprüfung (entrance exam) to qualify for German universities

•     Indian students: If you have a 12th + 3-year bachelor's degree, you may still need Studienkolleg for some public universities depending on programme and ECTS count

Private universities generally DO NOT require Studienkolleg
