Animation is the use of various technology and drawing skills to create movement of non-living characters on screen. This involves creating a lot of still frames and creating an illusion of movement. It is a more focused part of the industry. Animation involves the concepts of 2D and 3D animation and the necessary concepts involved. Some of the job roles/profiles include character modelling, rigging, story board formation, rendering etc.

An animation is an art form when manipulated, edited and played at a certain speed also known as frames per second and produces visual movement. There is also 3D animation such as Shrek, etc., which fundamentally involves art drawings, this is then taken and generated on computers to give realistic animations.
Multimedia is a platform for many types of visual communication such as sound video images touch interaction, etc. Multimedia is an umbrella which connects our networks together and which allows us to communicate in a visual way.

Under animation, just animation comes which include 2D animation or 3D animation. Multimedia covers video and editing with little bit knowledge about 2D and 3D animation.
Most important thing is that you have interest in which field. If you want to work in animation industry then go for animation.
If you want to become a video or sound editor then pick up a multimedia course.
