biotechnology is very good branch and it is very much popular in USA and Japan.

As my personal opinion, one should chose the branch which he/she likes. But if I have to suggest somebody , I will go for mechanical engineering because it has a better career option and more job opportunities. But I also want to tell you that I am also looking for Btech college and I will opt electrical and electronics branch because I think, I would generate a better understanding for it.

2012-06-11 11:38:10The most popular engineering discipline in the world is 'Industrial engineering' which is a combination of multiple disciplines but in India the popularity of engineering disciplines has been changing from traditional streams like Civil, Mechanical, Electrical to Electronics, IT, Chemical, Telecommunication, Computer science, etc. From 90's IT and Computer science were doing great with IT revolution and then looking at ups and downs of ITES sector last 2-3 years, the trend is going back to the classical streams like Civil, Mechanical, Electrical. The popularity vs job opportunities are the main reason for the students to select streams...more -
I'd recommend looking at all the different engineering fields first and recognizing just how many there are:
-Computer Engineer
-Electrical Engineer
-Mechanical Engineer
-Packaging Engineer
-Civil Engineer
-Chemical Engineer
-Industrial and Systems Engineer
-Microelectronic Engineer
-Software Engineer
-Aeronautics Engineer
-Biological Engineer
-Materials Engineer
-Nuclear Engineer
.and lots and lots more with all sorts of specializations. Pick what you want to do. Then find a university. Not the other way around. Also consider where you'll more than likely end up working. Consider the biggest candidates for employment. You can always call unive...more -

2012-05-24 17:24:37Well it will be difficult to segregate the most popular engineering stream as every stream has its own demand in the respective fields. To get more valuable inputs, I would request our elite experts to throw some light on the various engineering streams with respect to their interest.
Request Nikhlesh Mathur Dr.Goutam Chatterjee anjani jha Excel Nirmal Kr. sham_K chandan . kumar chandrashekhar Fakirpure gopal sharma. Himal Prasad Ghimiray Robin Agrawal varun.sharma Pawan_Gupta Khushwant Jain Gautam Joshi Priya Pooja Kohli and all the other experts to throw some light on the various engineering streams.
Thanks! -
There can also be situations when a student realizes after first year of mechanical engineering that it is not his/her cup of tea and wishes to transfer to another branch.Do you think it is possible? Do you think that colleges have provisions for that?

Dr.Goutam Chatterjee Totally Agree and that is what I call voice of experience! However,I have a related query,as an engineering aspirant ,do you suggest any way by which a student can assess his/her skill sets before opting for a stream? For instance, how can a student conclude that he/she can be good mechanical engineer? After all, there has to be some distinguishing skill that distinguishes an ECE graduate from mechanical graduate? What can be the criteria for self assessment?

Thanx @NSJ. If I go by the title of the discussion, then answer would be that popularity of engineering branches have cyclic trend based on market buzz. But if I go by the notion that which branch should be chosen then little discussion can be ensued. There are five core branches viz Mechanical, Civil, Electrical, Electronics & Communication and Computer Science. All other specializations or branches flow out of them. Many of the current offered branches are nothing but the lure by private engineering colleges for attracting students seats. Many are in fact M.Tech specializations like mechatronics, reliability, industrial engineering,...more

2012-05-17 17:24:40In the good old days there used to be various considerations while selecting the stream. But times have changed. The only thought is getting selected for some software company and going to the USA.Is there some thought anywhere? Are there jobs suitable for the specialization, excepting software?
