From traditional favorites Civil and Mechanical Engineering to Engineering Management and Ocean Engineering, there is an entire range of engineering disciplines one can opt for. Engineering is a big word.It offers several specialization but many students who clear class XII sit for entrance exams and get a decent rank do not know which engineering stream to opt for. What are the various skill-sets required to join various streams. For instance,What are the skill sets required to pursue Mechanical Engineering?

But then as said by arun dev i cannot ignore that one cannot stick with a few titled streams only as there is a lot to explore, but then the entire spree of exploring a discipline should be an outcome of ones interests that only a well knowledged person who can exhibit his goals and interests can do.

I believe that there are certain core fields of engineering or in fact any discipline, which may have a dip in market view but cannot be out of it. Until few years back, Civil engineering had lost its sheen and now the case seems totally different. But the point i want to make here is that the engineers who passed through both the phases of doom and boom were not unemployed or beared any major loss when compared to those who belonged to sub specializations . Like wise i think that the core streams are mostly the stronger ones and will always be in demand.

I agree with ankit rules but need to add few points, if we select engineering focusing of the demand then definitely traditionally followed streams like civil, chemical etc will have long term demand as till we live we need houses, roads, chemicals etc but if we tent satisfy demand supply factors we will put behind "true innovations" in every sector which can bring up by true genius and hope they are not trend hunters.

i don't think Petroleum Engineering does have any good scope in India in future or in Current Scenario. Currently Indian oil Corporation and Oil India limited have post the graduate Engineer Trainee Post In which there are Only 5 branches Civil , mechanical . Electrical . Chemical , instrumentation. even India's Biggest Oil Company IOC and OIL Doesn't Show any interest in Petroleum Engineering . how can you think that is has good Future. branches like Mechanical And Chemical Can Easily Over take Petroleum Engineering.

What I think is that popularity of a particular basically endangers the careers of the students. Popularity results into "bhed chaal" , which generally deviates a student from it's real goal and mostly his INTEREST area. No doubt mechanical, electronics, civil, mechatronics like streams are in more demand but at the same time streams like chemical, instrumentation, plastic, petroleum etc are neglected by many and are kept below in the top list. But these four streams particularly are quite fruitful if a person pursue them with dedication.

Well said said mathur, It's not only in engineering but in all sectors students chases popularity rather than their ability, as Aneeket said petroleum engineering i agree with him, Its well paid now but may be after 5-10 years the scarcity of petrol may force the usage of other alternatives and the popularity and pay may reduce, then we follow some other stream, so rather than searching the popularity and pay we receive, we should realize “whether I am a good egg for it?”

but,i want to contradict mr. mathur.that an engineer with well knowledge of industry are always in demand.it does not happen that whole world concentrate on only one type of work and remaining have stopped.even in resastion we need information technology.so i want to give advise to engineering aspirant.that do something in which you are profoundly interested.whether it is engg. or not.

Well, I personally believe that the popularity of a specific engineering discipline (branch) is more in the minds of the people than in the actual scenario. Not much should be read in it specially when the scenario's change as fast as the climate in India. It takes 4 years for a person to complete engineering course irrespective of the branch he/she opted. And in these 4 years interim time period the requirement of specific engineering expertise changes. For example when there is a construction boom then students obviously opt or civil engineering but by the time they come out as civil engineers the construction market takes a dip. Her

For example when there is a construction boom then students obviously opt or civil engineering but by the time they come out as civil engineers the construction market takes a dip. Here I must say that the IT sector has held itself for longer duration. But then we are all out also to make sub-branches of engineering out of the core branches. So in that case how do we put a finger on a particular branch that this is the one which is more popular. It may further get branch out soon for targeting more specifc expertise. There is one more very strange facet of today's society. We tend to believe that complex branches (or rather their names) are more important and hence opt for the same without knowing what exactly it is. There is no education in India which explain to the PCM students of XIIth about the different branches of engineering. We can venture deep into this as some sepearate topic. Here the irony is that young students ( and their not so young parents) go by the words of the other people (and advertisers in the business of education) rather than going by the inherent skills of the student. Different branches of engineering are popular at different places and the popularity depends upon the day to day requirment of that place. The so called most popular branches at one point of time flood a country (or state or place) with engineers of that branch and then things become difficult. Then there is jump to another one and the cycle repeats. Popularity of this is like a sinosoidal wave. The demand & supply theory hold good here also and therefore the popularity changes with the requirments.

Well as per me, I guess Petroleum engineering is one stream which has an international demand and pays well as well! Waiting for expert comments from Nikhlesh Mathur Gautam Joshi Deepak Rajpal Arvind Joshi245 Khushwant Jain arun dev

Electrical Engineering is the Mother Branch of all the new Modern Engineering i.e CS , Electronics , IT , Communication , Instrumentation etc in India For a Student from Electrical has all the options open to switch over for both JOB and Research

@ Smiriti matra there is no Course Like B.Tech in Geo technical Engineering. the Course is M.Tech in Geo technical Engineering and it is done only by Civil Engineering graduates as it is a Sub division of Civil Engineering. Most of the Branch people have mentioned that is Bio medical Engineering , Genetic Engineering , Aerospace Engineering doesn't have any scope in Ground reality in Indian. i have seen Lot of Students which have done their B.Tech in above Fields Doesn't get any job and force to job in a BPOs or changed Completely their Field. Choice of Engineering is a Personal as well as Career issue , Looking at the Economy in last 15 or 20 years Software has been able to create many new career avenues and this has made students from Computer Sc , Electronics , Electrical , Mechanical or Civil all plunging in to Software .But working in the core area of the mentioned Engineering has Equally rewarding career options in fact every engineering has .

Heard of Agricultural Engineering recently.then specializations like Ocean Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Water Treatments etc. might be more suited to equip students with skills related to their dream professions. What do others aspiring engineers really dream of?

Well a great discussion started by Smriti. There are several streams in engineering coming up and offering great opportunities. From the recent ones, I think, Biomedical engineering is one of the new dimensions to engineering given in recent times. This study is an option for those who want to work in development sector but catering towards the medical field. Other than this, one can also look for courses like Genetic engineering, Aerospace engineering, Petroleum having bright career opportunities.
