Dear Ali, admission in engineering colleges for B.Tech. course is done in following manner:-
For all IITs (there are 17 IITs in India), you will have to give JE-IIT exam which has already taken place for this year.
For all NITs (there are 13 NITs in India) and some 125 good government and private colleges, AIEEE exam has to be given. For this year, it is already conducted on 29Apr2012.
For admissions to all other government and private colleges, you will have to give state Pre-Engineering Test. These exams will be conducted during May month on different days for different states.
counseling will take place for admission procedure based on state PET exams. Lastly, there will be many colleges in each state who will be left with vacant seat. Admission then will be based on 12th PCM marks. Minimum is 45%. Remember all these will be useless colleges.

After your 10th you should consider enhancing your educational qualifications. One of the best approaches while deciding on your subjects/ stream is to opt for or look at doing something that you are good at and would enjoy. Therefore choose wisely keeping in mind your strengths.
*If mathematics and finance interest you then opt for commerce - you can opt for professional courses like Chartered Accountancy (CA), Certified Financial Analyst (CFA), Cost Accountancy (from ICWA), Company Secretary Ship (CS), Stock Broking or MBA.
*If science interests you then you can pursue engineering, civil aviation, merchant navy, medicine, architecture, etc.
*On the arts side there are careers like Media, Management, Design, Arts, Psychology, Hospitality, Law or Academics, graphic designing, multimedia, web designing, networking, software, etc.
The choice will depend on your individual interests, personality, aptitude, ability, strengths and career goals. It will help to work with career guidance professional. Alternatively you can take some online assessments of skills and personality to understand yourself better.

Each one is bound to follow the norms set by the governing body like AICTE, UGC, etc. And all the colleges select candidates based on their performance in different aptitude rounds that are conducted under the guidelines of the selection procedure.
