As per your ranks in SRM and VIT, your chances are very low or nil to get admission in any of these colleges. You need to have a better rank. So that if you can, then try next time.

Go for mechanical engineering as it is a core stream and u can move to automobile industry anytime having a degree in mechanical engineering. U can also appear indian engineering service after graduating in mechanical stream to get a top notch government job. I cannot tell you the exact rank cutoff as it varies on a lot of parameters and they change every year. I can tell you that a Tamil Nadu candidate has a good chance of getting a course at Coimbatore campus, if he or she has an AEEE AIR <10000 on a merit basis. However for ranks above 15000, one may have to come in through a management admit, which involves a higher cost.
