Research can be done in any of the streams, generally the students who want to opt for research based programs, can go for M.Sc then PhD in Science or Masters level courses in arts stream like history, Math etc. and then opt for PhD. Mostly all the streams would lead to PhD if a student want to go for Research as a career option. No you cannot. IELTS is very much mandatory. Infact, even if a university waives off your IELTS requirement, you would anyway have to take it at the time of visa. It's best that you take it right away. Target a score above 6.5 with a minimum score of 6 in each section or else you may have to retake the IELTS provided you score lower than the mentioned requirement.
