NET is an acronym for National Eligibility Test. National Eligibility Test is conducted by University Grants Commission (UGC) and is a gateway test in our country to start career as Lecturers or Assistant Professors in various Colleges, Universities and other Educational Institutions. This NET (National Eligibility Test) is conducted twice a year I. e. in the months of June and December and the notifications are released in March and September. UGC grants Junior Research Fellowship to the NET passed out candidates who are interested in research work in various Universities and Colleges. Those who qualify are categorized in two sections. NET -JRFand NET-Lecturer. Those whose rank is higher gets the NET-JRF after which one can apply in various institutions for admission to Ph.D. programmes. NET is only a qualifying exam- it does not ensure ones admission in any university. For that one has to face the interview board. NET-Lecturers are eligible to apply for the post of Lecturers in colleges. As per the guidelines of Central Government, UGC for the first time introduced the Junior Research Fellowship programme as a basic qualification to conduct researches in Universities and Institutions in the year 1984. In 1988 Central Government made its mandate to clear the National Eligibility Test for Lectureship, and in 1989 NET (National Eligibility Test) was conducted for the first time. The National Educational Testing Bureau of UGC has supervised the NET. Throughout the Country, UGC NET is conducted in 84 Test centers in 94 Subjects. Any Post Graduate candidate with minimum 55% of Marks can appear for the UGC NET exam. The minimum score for SC/ST/PH candidates is 50% Marks. Candidates who are currently pursuing their final year PG can also appear for NET. Ph.D. holders will be given exemption of 5% of Marks. The candidate should not have crossed the Age limit of 28 years by the date of the Notification. There is No age limit for the Post of Lectureship. The test is conducted for determining the eligibility of the Indian National candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) NET and for determining eligibility for appointment of Lecturers NET in certain subject areas in various Colleges and Universities across India.

The admissions process of some business schools requires that the MBA applicant attends a mandatory interview. These mandatory interviews are usually conducted as in person.
