Ph.D. Programme: Students admitted to this entirely research oriented programme will be provided an opportunity to undertake research under the guidance of a faculty member of the School in an area of his/her choice and approved by the School. The student will be periodically advised by a doctoral committee. Students admitted to the Ph.D. programme will be required to undergo some course work depending on their background or take certain additional courses to meet the demands of their research. The research work, in part or in entirety, can be carried out either within the University or at one of its formally recognized external research centres. The students are expected to actively participate in research seminars and submit monthly progress reports of their research work. The Ph.D. requirements also include presentation of the research work in a comprehensive seminar prior to submission of the doctoral thesis and a subsequent oral examination in support of the thesis.

There is a vast scope for the aspirants in terms of both higher studies and immediate jobs for one who has successfully completed the bachelor's degree in marine engineering. The role of a marine engineer mainly involves doing tasks related to the operation and maintenance of different machineries in a ship. Marine engineers have the complete responsibility for the design, selection of equipments and systems, installation, inspection, maintenance and repair. During design and construction processes marine engineers have to work in interface with the naval architects.
This why marine engineers are paid for their job.
