Practically speaking it is not possible to take admissions now in NIFT but yes you can sit for 2012 entrance exam in the month of February. NIFT admission test and the complete admission process is designed in a way to test a candidate on a variety of parameters like design aptitude, mental ability, creativity, sketching, communication skills and world view.
There are two tests in the first stage:
General Ability Test (GAT) for all courses
Creative Ability Test (CAT) for design course or Managerial Ability Test (MAT) for apparel production, management and technology courses.

Starting with your preparation, I would suggest you to go through the newspapers everyday and make a note of all the good articles or important news that you come across. You have to mug up the punch lines of various good and famous brands and also their Brand ambassadors, mug up the punch lines of various good news channels because they might ask it.
