Lets say the oxidation number of Mn is x
oxygen's oxidation number is -2
and the charge on the molecule is 1-
so:
1(x) + 4(-2) = 0
x - 8 = 0
x = +8
and then you must remember that there is a negative charge to the molecule. Subtract 1.
therefore oxidation number on Mn is +7
