See both of these branches are really good, it basically depends upon you that what do you wanna choose. Earlier Mechanical was the main branch in which everything was taught but with the time, several educational institutions have diversified mechanical enginnering into other branches such as Automobile, Aerospace, etc., etc.

I can tell you about both programs of Chandigarh University because I have been there, so as far as I know, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Chandigarh University has industry-sponsored labs, live projects, and expert mentorship from experienced faculty and industry professionals. There are opportunities for students to work on real machines and also develop new ones. The university also follows the Flexible Choice Based Credit System (FCBCS) 

Whereas, the Automobile Engineering course covers everything from designing car parts to testing vehicles for safety and students get hands-on experience through special labs like AutoCAD with CREO PTC, Automotive Electronics and Vehicle Maintenance centers. The programme also includes new trends like Electric and Hybrid Vehicles, Automation, Green Manufacturing, and Alternative Fuels like Biodiesel and Hydrogen.
