Media is a very broad term which includes many things such as journalism, production, direction, cinematography, advertising etc. and thus it is very difficult to study all at Bachelors level. Therefore a PG is recommended for Media students so that they can opt one domain of Media and specialize in that. Also if you look at the courses offered by Media institutes, it says PG in Advertising, PG in PR etc.
Now lets us come to the second part of your question, that is how can a higher course benefit. As a friend, I would like to say that a higher course is always beneficial as an extra knowledge never harms anyone! But if you look at Media, I would first advice you to gain some industry experience as media is a practical filed and requires a lot of Practical knowledge!!
So, I would like to conclude my answer by saying that; YES a higher course is beneficial in Media so that you specialize in a particular domain of media but before that make sure that you have some industry exposure.
