The qualifications you will require will depend on the level of teaching you want to opt for. The schooling system in India comprises of pre-school, elementary, secondary and senior secondary stages. The elementary stage is split into primary and the upper-primary stages. Schooling is offered in formal, non-formal and distance modes. Teacher education courses, therefore, are matched with the requirements of the concerned stage and the mode of schooling. Pre Primary Teacher Primary school teachers should preferably be 12th class pass with at least 50% marks aggregate.
There are a number of vocational training centres which conduct training for pre school teachers. There are Montessori Teacher training schools which offer training for pre-school education. Certificate for teaching at the elementary stage has been given different names by states. Some of them are BTC (Basic Teaching Certificate), D.Ed. (Diploma in Education), TTC (Teachers' Training Certificate) and there are many others.
But all of them are considered equivalent for the purpose of teaching in primary and upper-primary schools. For appointment of teachers for primary classes, basic teachers' training programme of 2 years' duration is required. B.Ed. is not a substitute for basic teachers' training programme. For Secondary and Senior Secondary Teachers, candidates must be a graduate with Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or its equivalent or four years' integrated B.Sc., B.Ed. or an equivalent course. For Senior Secondary/ PUC/ Intermediate, a Master's Degree in the relevant subject with Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) or its equivalent or a two years' integrated M.Sc.Ed. or an equivalent course is required.
