1) Chennai is a prime location for many good companies in India as compared to Kanpur.
2) IIT - Madras is older than Kanpur and it's the best IIT among all IIT's as per the ranking by MHRD.

You have a decent profile. Have you gone through any university website? You should first check the admission requirements and also check the different type of MS programs. Some are research based and some are course based. Again, there could be M. Engineering or M.Asc, entry requirements are different. Gaining admissions into a very highly ranked university could be competitive. You may also be required to take the GRE. There is no particular cut off rank. Your rank should be at least below 5000 to get mechanical engineering seat at Vellore campus.
For Chennai and other campuses it is enough if your rank is below 15000.

It depends upon the airlines. The minimum salary you will get will be around 1 lacs 30 thousand per annum. Salary also depends upon your experience and your qualification.
