The possibility is high to get an IIT if you drop a year and study, but you need to really work hard and you must be passionate towards your goal. The time of one year is really huge and so it should be used wisely, otherwise, it is better to get admission in any engineering college with your board exam marks.
If you are determined to study and dedicated towards your studying then you can get, but according to me, only if you can really work hard then you drop a year. Otherwise, don't waste your time.
The continuity of study is really important so that it is better to go to an engineering college now itself, but if you can

Our central government announced this for all the engineering entrance exams. A new exam conducting body for JEE Mains instead of CBSE.
But this decision is kept pending as colleges conduct counselling rounds and many state governments such as WB restrict to one single exam so a decision should be taken soon.

1) Candidate should have appeared JEE (Mains) 2017 (For 35% All India Seats and NRI Sponsored Category).
2) Candidate must have passed 12th Science Examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with the percentage of marks as to be decided by the Government of Gujarat under the rules of admission.

Good question. Yes — your Class 12 marks matter a lot for Thapar University admissions, especially for its B.Tech programs. Thapar also considers JEE Main scores for many courses, so your board marks can either boost your admission chances or act as a backup if your JEE score isn't very high

Yes, you can but you need to maintain your time management and give the maximum time of your day in classroom study and self-study too.

Different universities have different requirements. But in general, you should have a first class (at least 60%) for better chances of admissions and also visa. If you aiming for the top ranked universities, first class is not enough as you must have excellent grades (75% +) and a unique profile.
