There are many exams to get into IIT & NITs for the different courses and at the different levels:
IIT JEE: IIT JEE is the very first exam taken after the completion of class 12th for the Bachelor's degree at IITs and NITs.
IIT JAM : IIT JAM exam is also a national level entrance exam conducted for the UG students to pursue their Master's degree in science (M.Sc) at IITs & NITs.
GATE: GATE is another national level entrance exam conducted for the UG students to pursue M.Tech. at the IITs & NITs.
CAT: CAT is an exam conducted for the management student to pursue a management course from the IITs.

First and most importantly just don't worry. You have chosen the best branch. Humanities have great potential ahead. There is so much variety of courses available, you can't even imagine.

That's absolutely untrue as mechanical graduates infact have a lot of scope in the market as present. Mechanical Engineering is a core and evergreen branch. Almost all core industries and manufacturing units makes use of machines. Thus, for functioning and maintenance of machines, qualified Mechanical Engineers are needed by such Industries!
The point is- there are ample amounts of job opportunities for B.E./B.Tech. Mechanical Engineering graduates in Government as well as Private sector. When it comes to Government sector, organizations and departments like- Indian Railways, DRDO, Indian Armed Forces, BHEL, PWD, NHAI, St
