From a front desk perspective:
Advantages:
-A lot of downtime
-Easy to get into without much work experience
-You're valued-at least relative to other jobs I've had and fields I've been in-if you're a good employee and do a good job, possibly leading to quick promotions and/or raises
-You interact with a lot of interesting people
-You get a lot of interesting/funny stories out of it
-You help people
Disadvantages:
-When it's busy, it's really busy. You're either bored to tears or you have more people to help than you can handle. It's almost like people know when other people need the front desk and all call or come at the same time.
-A lot of hotels don't like to give you a stable schedule that doesn't change from week to week and want you to work almost any shift
-Rude and/or unrealistic guests
-Problems that are beyond your control, but you have to answer for them with the guest
-Guests assume you're some type of expert on everything in the hotel and in the city
