The National Educational Testing Bureau of the UGC conducts NET to determine eligibility for lectureship, Assistant professor, and for an award of JRF for Indian nationals in order to ensure minimum standards for entrants in the teaching profession and research.
Eligibility Criteria:
Students who have secured at least 55 percent marks in a Master's Degree or equivalent examination from universities or institutions recognized by UGC in Humanities and Social Science, Computer Science, Applications, Electronic Science, etc. are eligible for the NET exam. The OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PWD category students who have secured at least 50 percent marks in a Master's degree or equivalent examination are eligible for the NET exam. The Ph.D. degree holders whose Master's level examination had been completed by September 19th, 1991 shall be eligible for a relaxation of 5 percent in aggregate marks for appearing in UGC NET.
Age Limit: 31 years for JRF and No age limit for AP.
The validity of the UGC NET Certificate for AP or lectureship in 2021 is valid for life. Students can benefit from the award letter anytime. However, for the award of a JRF, the UGC NET e-Certificate remains valid for three years from the date of issue. However, according to the official website, the system was changed in 2022 so that the Certificate will be valid for 4 years from the date the UGC NET E-Certificate was issued. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the M.Phil and Ph.D. admissions processes in universities and higher education institutions have been postponed, commencing in March 2020. The validity of the UGC NET Certificate has been extended by up to four years for:
