I have just answered a similar query to you. Well for this one, to be eligible for various posts in Civil Services India, exams are conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) every year, for the same one needs to be:
*An Indian National Citizen
*A graduate in any discipline from a recognized university and
*Between the age limit of 21 to 30 years.
To know more about the complete list of services and their posts and pay scale check the CS List of Services. The examination procedure consists of three phases, Preliminary (held in May), Main (held in October/November) and Interview (held in March/April).
Talking about the Examination pattern there would be two papers in prelims- Reasoning Aptitude and English Comprehension followed by the main exam that would entirely be subjective.
Preparing for this competitive and high intensity exam is very tough part of everything for the preparation some prefer self study while others opt for coaching.
To add on I would say to follow the 7 easy steps in order to crack the examination in one go:-
*Clear you basic Concepts
*Work on you vocabulary
*Develop the habit of reading
*Reasoning skills can be improved by solving puzzles
*Practice a lot
*Once you know your strengths and weaknesses, go for some full-length tests. Observe how you improve your score with each passing test.
*Revise

Well, I would say not to worry if you do not wish to go for coaching, you can still think of going ahead provided you spend quality time everyday by reading journals, magazines, newspapers, etc. For the study material I would suggest you to either contact the nearby book stores. As far as preparing on GK is concerned, you can refer Competition Success Review for updates on current affairs.
