For preparation I would suggest that you should join a coaching Institute as Civil Service Examination is a tough nut to crack. If you plan for self study, few of the important things to remember is you need to do a lot of hard work (as there is no short cut to hard work), proper utilization of resources and Proper Time Management. Also keep yourself updated on current affairs (read News papers especially the editorial part, watch news channels) & work on your language skills (read novels, work on your grammar & vocabulary). Also work on the subject knowledge as in whichever optional subjects you would opt for in Mains you should have a good fundamental knowledge about those subjects.
