Hi,
In order to pursue Undergraduate course in US, you need to have:
12 years of education, with good academic background, preferably 60% plus in 12th.
Relevant 12th degree from recognized education board.
TOEFL score 80-90 plus.
SAT score of 1700 plus.
The universities in US have 2 admission intake in a year, namely:
Fall (August)
Spring (January)
So first of all you need to decide in which admission intake you want admission, and accordingly you can start your application process at least 6-7 months in advance of you planned admission intake.
An average tuition fee of a US university is about US$ 30,000 per-year and average living expenses are about US$ 10,000 per-year.The tuition fee and living expense might be more or less depending on the university and location.

As very rightly said by Gautam Joshi, there is a difference in being passionate and in knowing the skill well. In case you have strong hold on your writing skills and you are sure to make a successful career out of it then only you should take the risk to go against your parents' wishes and try to convince them about it but if you have even 1 % of doubt then suggestion would be that you should go with what your parents are advising you.

It actually depends on the course you wish to take. Secondly, it also depends on the delivery. There could be colleges which are reputed for delivery.
