Yes, there is a good scope for automobile engineering in India. In the recent days, there has been a rapid increase in the sales of electric vehicles.
As we only have a lesser amount of fossil fuels, the vehicles that run on petrol, diesel, etc., will slowly decrease and those vehicles with alternative fuel would increase.
But in the curriculum of most of the colleges, they don't include the electric vehicles or vehicles with alternative fuel. So, if you are capable of learning and interpreting them by your own efforts, then surely you can shine.
It is not that, the current syllabi would not be deemed outdated as that forms the base of automobiles.
All these factors would let the way to only those who are highly skilled and qualified in the field of automobiles.
In all, there is a good scope for automobile engineering but you need to learn more other than that in your curriculum.
