Dear Student,
With AIR above 85178, you are sure not to get admission into NITs or other good central engineering colleges , unless you fall in SC/ST category.
But as you have got this rank in this attempt, I would advise you to give one more chance to yourself and put some extra hard work to get a better rank next year.
Be wise, as it's a one time decision and the most critical one for your career, because once you get into some engineering college, you might regret later that you could have prepared for a much better college.
Do take this drop year if you can afford.
Best of luck for your future !

Dear Student,
To be applicable for Professor post, criterion vary a bit for IITs, NITs and Govt. Colleges as they all belong to different universities and some of them are autonomous too.
Normally Phd. with some experience is good for IITs and NITs.
For normal Govt. colleges , a PG degree suffices.
The plain graduates find it hard in Govt. Colleges though private engineering colleges these days do hire some engineering graduates but that's never a safe and good option unless you are highly interested in teaching profession.
Do ask back for further queries.
If liked this reply, please select this as 'best answer' or give 'Thumbs Up'.

Hi Tejas,
Although there is no such problem if you pursue a course through a private institute, but it is important that the institute/ course should be recognized by the government body. ISO is not the regulating body for approving and affiliating courses and institutes in India, instead it is the bodies like AICTE or UGC and approvals from such bodies are required to pursue a valid course.
If you are yet to take admission or are in the first year itself, then you may consider writing entrances again and look for better options to pursue Engineering from a well recognized University.
Kindly revert for any further queries, also if you lik
