Although there aren't any set pattern following which one can qualify the UGC NET but then a lot of hard work and determination is required to pursue the same.
There are several reference texts available in the market depending for the subject that you apply for.

Few of the good Universities which you may consider for MA English through Correspondence are:
Annamalai University
University of Bombay
University of Madras
Indira Gandhi National Open University
Bangalore University
As these Universities are of repute, their Distance Education programmes should be good but to providing you a concrete information on their curriculum would be difficult for this I would suggest you to visit their site and go through their course curriculum. Also visit these institutes through shiksha and read their alumnae speak section
