It is good to start off with a practice test, the practice test will show your scores and information on which areas and questions you did well and vice versa. You don't have to prepare beforehand, just take a random practice test. Schedule your study plan and strategies only after the first practice test. Stick to your calendar, 4 to 5 days a week for an hour or two depending on your capabilities, schedule one practice test every week after revision. It will give you an idea of your improvement and scores. Also, when you take the practice tests make sure you are not disturbed, you can check GRE website for practice tests and other online materials plus software. 3-5 months on an average is required for GRE preparation. The more you practice, the better you will get. Books from Kaplan and Manhattan prep are good ones.
