Students who wish to pursue higher studies in genetics or genetic engineering should have an aptitude for scientific research, a probing mind, dedication and team spirit. Genetic engineering could involve specialization related to plants, animals and human beings. This field is a high-growth area that has thrown up several job opportunities. There is a great scope in this field as the demand for genetic engineers are growing in India as well as abroad. Genetic engineers are mainly absorbed in medical and pharmaceutical industries, the agricultural sector, and the research and development departments of the government and private sectors. You can also take up teaching as an option. Some of the universities which offer genetic Engineering courses at postgraduate and doctorate levels are the Bio-Informatics Centre of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) New Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology (Kharagpur and Delhi), Delhi University, University of Calcutta, MKU-Coimbatore, Birla Institute of Technology (Pilani Rajasthan), University of Lucknow, Jadavpur University (Kolkata, West Bengal) etc. Most of the universities/institutes do not offer courses in genetic engineering as a separate discipline, but as a subsidiary to biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry streams. Some of the universities conducting related courses are the following: The University of Kerala Thiruvananthapuram - M.Sc. Genetics and Plant Breeding; University of Madras, Chennai - M.Sc. Biomedical genetics; The Vellore Institute of Technology (Deemed University) Vellore- M.Sc. Biomedical Genetics, Andhra University, Visakhapatanam- M.Sc. Human Genetics, Sri Rama Chandran Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai - M.Sc. Human Genetics; Madurai Kamraj University, Madurai - M.Sc. Plant Genetics Engineering,M.Sc.- Microbial Gene technology,Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi - M.Sc. Molecular and Human Genetics. A national level examination, GATE -Graduate Aptitude Test Engineering is a qualifying exam for admissions to post-graduate programs (e.g., M.E., M.Tech, direct Ph.D.) in Indian institutes of higher education with financial assistance provided by MHRD and other Government agencies. GATE scores may also be used by Public and Private Sector.
The exam tests the comprehensive understanding of candidate in various undergraduate subjects including Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture and post-graduate level subjects in Science.
The exam, which is conducted online, encompasses 22 papers. The exam papers will have questions for which numerical answers must be keyed in by the candidate using the virtual keypad. However, the rest of the questions are of Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) type.

32 is too low a score to secure a seat in a government reputed college. However, you may appear for other entrance exams and secure a seat in a reputed institution.

With PCM combination of subjects, you can pursue almost any field you set your mind on. You can ofcourse do Engineering which is a professional degree and has streams such as Electrical, Mechanical, Electronic and Communication etc. You can do your graduation in subjects of your interest, even switching to Humanities or Commerce streams if you so desire. You can do a BCA (Computer Applications), BBA (Business Administration), Law, Civil Aviation – Pilot, Astronomy, Architecture, Design, Mass Communication, Merchant Navy, Defense Forces, Psychology, Civil Services etc. To decide on the course, you should analyse your strengths, career goals, interests, personality, aptitude and ability. If you decide based on these parameters you will put in your best effort and will be successful
