Hi,
To join Merchant Navy, you require plus two (PCM) with 1 year pre-sea training as a deck cadet.
If you pursue B.Sc.(Nautical Science) in the officer cadre, it will lead you to become captain after 5-7 years of experience.
You can also join it directly after B.Tech in marine engineering, mechanical, electrical, electronics & telecommunication, naval architect.
Except marine engineering candidates, others have to undergo a 10 months pre-sea training which is offered by many institute and port trusts or recruiting company itself. After that you will be appointed as a 5th or junior engineer. It will take you 5-7 years depending in your own abilities for becoming 'chief engineer'.

1. Shortlist the university where you wish to pursue Phd.
2. Then contact the admission department of these shortlisted universities.
3. Request them to give you detailed information regarding eligibility for pursuing Phd.
Overall, the eligibility criteria for Ph.D varies for every institute. However the basic requirement is a Masters degree or an equivalent degree in the relevant discipline. However the cut off percentages vary. Some of the institutes conduct entrance exams and some of them require atleast two Research Publications for the Ph.D programs. Some also require work experience of a couple of years.
