Top schools for Nursing in USA are University of Pennsylvania, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Alabama, University of California Los Angeles, University of Michigan, University of Maryland and New York University among others.
Since you have a diploma in nursing you must enter into a traditional bachelor of nursing programmes in USA. However you can consult with the university for any other course options. General entry requirements include SAT scores, TOEFL scores, high school transcripts, letter of recommendation, school specific essays. Applications are generally submitted through Common Application. alongwith the required application fee.

The Masters degree is a degree obtained after following a full programme, which contains taught courses and their exams following by a dissertation. If you do not want to complete a dissertation and just follow and pass the modules then you obtain a postgraduate diploma.
Criteria for postgraduate certificates and diplomas will vary from course to course. In general a Postgraduate Diploma will have the same taught module requirements as the Masters qualification, but will omit the research project.
However, a masters degree will fetch you better career scope a per my understanding.

It is actually an art in itself where one is trained in how to take care of sick people after properly equipped with the knowledge of science of health care and this is considered as one of the kindest jobs around the world. Its domain is basically women specific. For the eligibility,
* Candidate must have passed 10+2 in Biology, Chemistry and Physics subjects from a recognized school or equivalent
* Bachelor's degree in nursing course from an accredited university or college is must.
* Some institutes may demand for experience of one or two years in the field and registration in State Nursing Council is also needed.

A prospective registered nurse (RN) must receive training in several of the basic areas of nursing, such as nursing for psychiatric patients, mothers and newborns. Courses to become an RN are found in full degree programs.
RN courses are most often taken in associate's and bachelor's degree programs in nursing. While both types of programs prepare students to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) and get licensed to work as RNs, bachelor's programs can lead to additional career opportunities in teaching, research and management. Some bachelor's programs, especially those offered online, have RN licensure as a prerequisite for enrollment.
Aspiring RNs usually take a set of pre-nursing courses in topics that might include anatomy and physiology, psychology and microbiology. An introductory nursing course provides an overview of patient care techniques. Students then learn to perform health assessments, administer medications, provide patients with health and wellness advice, and supervise other nursing professionals. Students also gain hands-on clinical experience at the basic, intermediate and advanced levels throughout their program.
Hence I believe a science background particularly in Biology will be an added advantage.
