In terms of value and acceptablity, any PGDM program is considered at par with an MBA. Do go through any IIM websites which also conduct full time PGDM or PGPM programs.

As on date many Universities accept a PGDM program for taking up a PhD, however there are some universities that insist on a masters degree. For pgdm students the other option is to complete Fellow Prog In Mgt (FPM) recognized as PhD and offered by autonomous institutes like the IIM'S ,XLRI, NMIMS, MDI, IMT etc.
AIU is an association of Universities and approval of AIU is not compulsory. Whats imp is an approval from the AICTE which is a Govt body.
