IITs and NITS are the best option for doing engineering in India.
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) are autonomous public institutes of higher education. IITs are located at Bhilai, Madras, Delhi, Dhanbad, Dharwad, Goa, Guwahati, Jammu, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Bombay, Roorkee, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Mandi, Palghat, Patna, Ropar, Tirupati and Varanasi.
IITs are the most sought after technical Institutes in India with international fame and brand. The IITs have a common admission process for undergraduate admissions, called JEE Mains & JEE Advanced. Students for IIT are selected on the basis of JEE Advanced. Admission for Postgraduates degrees in IIT are by GATE, JAM and CAT for engineering, Science and Management degrees respectively.

NIT were earlier known as Regional Engineering College. Though not as good as IITs, they are also excellent Institutes for Engineering. NITs select students based on JEE Main.
