Design is a field that is age old and has been evolving every year like science.
The world has changed a lot and a lot of new and wonderful careers in design have come up. Sometimes student artists are too much enamored by fine arts preventing them to look objectively at design. Again like science it pays to be at the cutting edge.
Similarly in design the cutting edge areas are UID/ UXD, 3D Printing, Immersive Technology, Augmented Reality, 3D Projection etc., besides of course game design and animation. Of course at the top of the pile lies Concept Designing (usually reserved for writers and visionaries), these people are required by event companies, animation studios, VFX Studios, and of course game studios. At this stage, you may want to understand the creative world and the careers it offers. Interiors, textile as well as web design rely on the same skills, your layout skills and color sense.
Journalism also is at this level and relies on your language skills and knowledge of history and current affairs. A little higher perches graphic design, fashion design, jewelry design, acting, and fine arts which rely on one of your artistic skills, sketching and imagination. At a similar level perches VFX as well as motion graphics which rely on one of your artistic skills, cinematographic skills and imagination. Then come careers like animation, film making, and game design which rely on multiple talents like your authority over sketching, acting, direction, voice, sound, writing, storytelling and problem solving skills etc. Any extra skill can be used in this. So it turns out to be one of the most challenging as well as satisfying careers. Sure not recommended for the weak hearted.
Do remember that digital design careers (e.g. web design, graphics, UI design, animation, VFX, multimedia) give better profits since they can be delivered anywhere in the world and hence may earn in dollars, resulting in better rewards for designers.

It is difficult to put together a list since every college would have some specialization and some weakness. For e.g. take NID. Well, NID does offer a course in animation design. It also has courses in communication/ new media. Although NID has not yet acknowledged the fields of 3D, VFX and gaming in their teaching. It would be a good course to learn pre-production theory.
Animation is an art form and a very demanding career. It has ample opportunities for the creatively talented people.
Opportunities lie in UI design, graphic design, storyboarding, animation design, game design, 3D modelling, texturing and lighting, dynamics and VFX and of course animation (2D and 3D).
Of course at the top of the pile lies concept designing, these people are required by event companies, animation studios, VFX Studios, and of course game studios.
However, choosing between these must be done after seeing your performance in each of these. So going for a generic course covering all or most of these would be the best way to get started in these careers.
Typically you should have good sketching skills to be able to make a sound career in this (if you work hard you can improve your drawing skills tremendously).
Nothing but your innermost talent and passion should lead you to the course and the institute you choose. Go speak to people over there and see if you like their philosophy and they change your perspective. Try their website for more details. Also remember that animation requires good mentoring. Typically go for a school which offers all the information including faculty on their website.
