You can start preparing now with basic concepts of mathematics and make it strong. Try as many problems as possible for topics like ratio, proportion, series and algebra. You can refer books like:
1. Pearson.
2. Tata McGraw Hill.
3. Arun Sharma.
Verbal needs more of practice and concentration, and so is DI/LR.
You can join a coaching institute for CAT preparation. As they have a prepared curriculum with weekly tests to evaluate individuals performance.

You have wrote that you are in third year of graduation in mechanical engineering, which means you still have one more year. I am confused how you became eligible for XAT? But if you are in 4th year, you should score above 60 percentile, but they usually admit students through MAT exam, which is easier than XAT. But next MAT is on February 2017 but PSG might finish its selection before that.

You can be a good engineer if you put your maximum efforts into it. There is no criteria to rate yourself as average or scholar. Just be eligible for JEE Mains. If you get less marks then the eligibility cutoff then truly you won't be able to do it.

You can buy an application form from SSN trust office in Chennai. You can fill the form and send it to the same address. They will select based on your class 12th scores.
If you will be shortlisted, they will call for counselling. Then, you have to write the aptitude test conducted by them in the college and have to attend the interview. Based on your performance in test and interview, they will select the candidates.
